Elizabeth I : Cutouts I 1994 - 1998
In the Elizabeth paintings, the queen appears as on a stage with the scenery backdrop. I pushed the idea further by making a larger than life cutouts similar to the paper dolls I had loved as a child. The cutout queens are made from plywood with ornate paper dresses which was removable and interchangeable. I set into installations with boxes and other imagined belongings which I had created for her.
Me, Me, Me & Me Collaboration with Sheila Spence 1996
The queen cutout work led to a collaboration with Winnipeg photographic artist Sheila Spence. We photographed the “queen” in the rural landscape and in various places throughout the province. The resulting work was shown at the St. Norbert’s Arts and Cultural Centre in 1996. Images with asterisk * from that collaboration.
