Elizabeth I : Cutouts II 1996 - 1998
The Gathering On-site Installation 1997
In these installations I explore the idea of multiples. I find the idea of the queens as lawn ornament very funny, especially when placed in a wooded glade among other glittery lawn ornaments bearing gifts for her. These acrylic on plywood queens are about three feet high.
Flood of the Century 1998
For an exhibit at A-Space in Toronto I produced an installation which included a large painting, 29 little Elizabeths and a video. The following is a statement I used for that exhibition.
“Over the years I have made large and small drawings and paintings of Elizabeth I. I have created large cutouts of her which were then photographed in the prairie landscape. I have built objects of adoration for and about her. I have created many small queen cutouts, some which permanently stand in outdoor groups and some which have floated down rivers. Elizabeth has become an alter ego, a “friend" and a vehicle for my explorations. She has taken me to new levels of self-understanding and self-acceptance.”
